An Officer and a Gentleman

June is already about to end, but I cannot let it pass without writing about the first man that I ever loved.

My Dad.

Not every child is blessed with the opportunity to be with his/her parents. It is a fact and a sad reality that has become increasingly common nowadays in the society. The prevalence of failed marriages and other factors that break families apart or prevent them from being whole, makes me feel fortunate to have lived my life with the loving presence and guidance of both my mother and father under one sturdy roof.

My dad was a soldier and an officer in the Philippine Army. In his youth, he was a consistent honor student; he was able to put himself through college as a working student, all the way to an MBA degree in Ateneo, by sheer patience and perseverance.

While simultaneously working and attending school, he also devoted his time to help out his family by sending his siblings to school. He is second among the brood of 3 boys and 2 girls, yet he stood as the family's breadwinner.

He met my Mom when he was assigned in Leyte during the late '60s; he fell in love with the lovely Waray lass 11 years his junior and later married her a month after he turned 32. Theirs is a love story that spans 39 years of marriage to date, yet it still carries the same warmth and magic it always had.

Mini Him

I am more like my dad, in many aspects. In fact, he would always joke about me being his 'junior', because of our unmistakable similarities. Apart from our shared love for spicy food, just like him, I am also being commonly referred to as the enigmatic and intimidating silent type who writes more and talks less.

A voracious reader, he ingrained in me the love for reading at a very tender age. I remember his shelf full of books on health, power, how to get rich and positive thinking. Two of his favorite books that he shared with me are Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People and Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking.

So that’s how I got the optimistic virus, huh? He gave me a gift that would carry me through a lifetime.

A Good Soldier

Majority of his assignments were in provinces and NPA (New People's Army) infested remote barrios, where my mom bravely tagged along and experienced distributing hand grenades to soldiers' wives, whenever there's a threat of rebel attack in the community.

My sister and I on the other hand, stayed in Manila counting the days when they will be back home again. We survived the distance through prayers, radio to phone patches, letters, telegrams and scheduled school break vacations with them.

The magic acronym to us then was ETA (Expected Time of Arrival), for that's the time when we will see each other again.

He finally tendered his early retirement in 1987 to be with us, but mainly to spare his integrity from the pressures of corruption from his superiors.

The Survivor

Dad became a health buff later on and buried his nose in health books and medical research. It was then that fate played a trick on him and out of the blue came out the big bad 'C'.

He was diagnosed to have Cancer of the vocal cord in 2003.

It was heartbreaking and world-shattering to be told that this man who hasn't smoked a cigar in his lifetime, doesn't drink liquor and is leading a relatively healthy lifestyle had this particular disease already in its advanced stage.

Nevertheless, we did not lose hope. As a family, we had to be strong enough to face this trial head-on. We armed ourselves by storming the heavens with prayers and thoroughly researched about the disease and its treatment. We opted for surgery, but dad compromised that whatever happens, chemotherapy and radiotherapy will never be an option.

The operation was successful, but the recuperating stage was the most emotionally and physically draining aspect of the treatment. A tracheostomy tube was temporarily placed in the hole/stoma in his throat after the operation, where a continuous supply of mucus come from.

I had to learn how to suction to keep his air passage clear, every time. I, who faint at the mere sight of blood, was able to survive this medical nightmare.

This has made our family stronger in more ways imaginable. With God's grace, dad has remained Cancer-free to date, but the trial doesn't end there. Currently, he is under continuous medication for congestive heart failure.

Physically he is strong, but anatomically, his heart has gone weak. Even the doctors were amazed on how he survived this condition without major attacks and other physical manifestations. He attributes this miracle to taking alternative supplements religiously that improved his overall well-being.

The Best Father

I know this post has gone longer than I originally planned, but there will never be enough words to describe this great man who is a loving and loyal husband, a good father, a role model and a prayerful son of God. He is one of the few men who gives justice to the word 'father' in its truest essence and meaning.

They say that a dad will know if he has been a good father when his daughter's ideal man is 'just like daddy'. This rings true because I would also like to end up with someone who is just like my first love, my hero and real super man.

Thank you dad, for all that you are and all that you've given to make our family what it is today - solid and God-centered. In my heart, you will always be the best father and teacher. I love you!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

Out of Touch

Another beauty in our garden.

I was on low profile last week.

I'm sure some of you were wondering (oh, were you?) where I was, as I have missed on my regular EntreCard dropping and blog walking. Also, I wasn't able to leave and respond to messages, do my pending (perennial) tags, exchange links with new friends and catch on the latest posts of my favorite blogs.

Well, it is for the simple reason that my PC crashed (yes, it C-R-A-S-H-E-D!) and was brought back to life just 2 days ago. Thanks to my dear friend and lifetime technical support (hmm, after waiting for a few days because he is such a busy guy), this baby is up and running again!

There were some casualties though. Files that I had in my desktop (mostly downloaded) and My Docs (some of my pictures and PSD files - waahh!), plus programs in drive C. Good that I was able to place majority of my files in drive D, where they were left unharmed.

I'm already having dreams of reminding myself to back up. It's a mental note that I know I must do, this time around.

Of course, for every trouble there is always a bright side. I was able to rest well and sleep earlier (around 12:00 mn - 1:00 am ^^,) than usual and I spent more quality time with the Little Lady talking about school, Totally Spies, Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers (say, who? Ugh, outdated me had to search the internet for these guys).

Now that everything is back to normal, I have to start blogging like crazy. :)

Surviving the First Week of School

It had been pretty crazy around the house last week. School started June 10, and the Little Lady’s daily class schedule is at, would you believe, 6:20 a.m.?

As I hesitatingly nodded in agreement on the unbelievably early a.m. schedule a few weeks back during her enrollment, pictures of myself sleeping early kept flashing in my mind. Argh. As a nocturnal being since I don’t know when, I cannot remember the last time I hit the sack early.

Early for me is 12:00 midnight, by the way.

The little lady herself, is used to sleeping late (oh, this is the part that makes me feel like I am a bad mother). She reads, writes, draws and thinks of activities she can do during bedtime. It must be genetic, huh?

I know it will be difficult for her (and for me, that is!) to wake up very early in the morning. Last year, she wakes up at 10 a.m. to prepare for her 12:00 noon class, so there is no need to hurry. After all, her previous school was just a ride away from our house, in case she misses the school service. But now she has to get up at 4:30 a.m. to get everything done before the school service picks her up at 5:30 a.m.

I decided it has to be now, or never. I do not want her to grow up with the same sleeping habit that I have and I really need to train her to be an early riser.

So the past week, I limited myself to spending an hour or two online. (Ever wondered why I missed a drop on your EntreCard or why I did not respond to your message right away?) I also come home late from the office due to a series of overtime work, that is why I have to make sure that I put the little lady to sleep around 9:30 p.m. - the most, before I face the computer.

Good thing she did not have much trouble getting up early, maybe because of excitement over her new school and classmates. I, on the other hand, get up half-awake like a semi-zombie, having just an hour or two of sleep daily for the whole week.

Nevertheless, I am happy with the way things turned out last week, except for her first day where she got lost inside the school and did not find her way to the school service.

Little Girl Lost

I was at the 22nd floor having a training workshop that time, when I got a message from the driver that they could not find her. I panicked and almost flew down the stairs just to be there quick. Thank heavens, it was just a ride from the office so I managed to go there in just a few minutes.

When I arrived, I was ushered to the school parlor where I found her sleeping. The lady guard said she was crying when she saw her. I commend the school for having plenty of guards around who do not allow children to go out alone.

Imagine, I almost had a heart attack (figuratively, of course) that day! Teary-eyed, I was calling all the angels and saints in heaven on my way there. It may seem like an overreaction, but I won’t be able to forgive myself if something happened to her and I am not there.

Ahh, talk about the joys, pains and sorrows of parenthood. It is truly a daily roller coaster ride.

So how was your kids' first week of school?

Finding Great Deals Online

I always find it quite exciting to see great deals on the internet that are priced much lower than those being sold at the regular shops. These online shops do not maintain physical stores, thus saving a lot on rentals, staff cost and other overhead expenses. This is the reason why they are able to offer budget-friendly products, to the advantage of its patrons and consumers.

Lately, I am contemplating on buying myself a new mobile phone. I have been searching online for good deals that will not only suit my budget and preference, but of course, the safety of my potential purchase as well. Safe shopping is always of utmost importance to online shoppers that is why we should try our best to make sure that we are buying only from trusted merchants.

Luckily, I came across Tiga Dua Cellular, a recognized online distributor that specializes in selling a wide range of wireless phones, accessories, gadgets and various consumer electronics. This is where I found the cheapest deals on brand new and unlocked mobile phones, all in one stop!

Although now I am still quite ambivalent as to what brand and model to choose (oh, they have glorious selections!), it is comforting to know that I could always get my dream phone online anytime, without having to look further or leaving the house for that matter. :)

Curious? You can check out their cool offers at http://tigaduacellular.com.

Sharing the Love

I received this very special award Sharing the Love from Hailey. I feel honored to receive this. :)

This award is extra special because Crystal created it in honor of the donor who saved her son's life. Her son Noah had to have a heart transplant when he was just over a month old. This award is supposed to help raise awareness of the importance of organ donation.

So, here are the rules Crystal gave:

“The rules of this award are: SHARE THE LOVE!!! Share this award with all those blogs out there that you love. All the people who make you smile. All those that make you laugh. All those that make your day. All those that leave uplifting comments on your blog. **All I ask, is that you include a link to this post with the award and ask your recipient to do the same**

As you may have recently seen on my side bar, I have finally created a custom blog award!! I have wanted to do this for a long time but never came up with something that “fit”. I didn’t want just anything. It had to be something that meant something to me. And what could mean more than Sharing the Love by giving you pieces of my heart??

So I created this award in Honor Of The Donor That Saved Noah’s Life. I share this award with those of you whose love and friendship have enriched my life and made my world a better place.

I hope by passing this award around the blogging world we can all help raise awareness of the need for Organ Donation.”

I’m passing this award to the following:

Lorelie, Girlie, Bhang and Wena.

To My Child

Chestene's photo courtesy of Smart Parenting Magazine

I got this a long time ago from a friend through forwarded email. This poem was written by Sally Meyer for her son Dhylan, who was diagnosed with autism in 1995. I’ve been keeping this in my computer and whenever I get so busy, I read this over and over again to remind me of the most important person in my life – my child.

It is so easy to get lost in doing things that we deem important in day-to-day living. Work most especially, consumes majority of our time and it is really sad to miss out on seemingly negligible things that concern our children, because we are so busy working – beaming smiles, hug attacks, silly games, listening to endless whys, watching cartoons, eating candies and ice cream, playing pretend, reading stories, blowing bubbles… and every single thing that matters to them.

We neglect to share with them the things that make us a part of their world, while we are busy preparing a great future ahead of them.

I believe it is never too early or too late for anything. Please read on and pass this to other parents as well, if you wish. This is something really worth reflecting upon.

Did it bring tears to your eyes? Do share your thoughts.

TO MY CHILD

by Sally Meyer

Just for this morning, I am going to
smile when I see your face and laugh
when I feel like crying.
Just for this morning, I will let you
choose what you want to wear,
and smile and say how perfect it is.
Just for this morning, I am going to
step over the laundry and pick you up
and take you to the park to play.
Just for this morning, I will leave the
dishes in the sink, and let you teach me how to
put that puzzle of yours together.

Just for this afternoon, I will unplug
the telephone and keep the computer off,
and sit with you in the backyard and blow bubbles.
Just for this afternoon, I will not
yell once, not even a tiny grumble when you scream
and whine for the ice cream truck, and I will buy
you one if he comes by.
Just for this afternoon, I won't worry
about what you are going to be when you grow up, or
second guess every decision I have made
where you are concerned.
Just for this afternoon, I will let you
help me bake cookies, and I won't stand over you
trying to fix them.
Just for this afternoon, I will take us
to McDonald's and buy us both a Happy Meal so you can
have both toys.

Just for this evening, I will hold you
in my arms and tell you a story about how you were
born and how much I love you.
Just for this evening, I will let you
splash in the tub and not get angry.
Just for this evening, I will let you
stay up late while we sit on the porch and count
all the stars.
Just for this evening, I will snuggle
beside you for hours, and miss
my favorite TV shows.
Just for this evening when I run my
fingers through your hair as you pray,
I will simply be grateful that God has given me
the greatest gift ever given.

I will think about the mothers and fathers
who are searching for their missing children,
the mothers and fathers who are visiting their children's
graves instead of their bedrooms.
The mothers and fathers who are in hospital rooms
watching their children suffer senselessly and screaming
inside that little body.

And when I kiss you goodnight I will hold
you a little tighter, a little longer.
It is then, that I will thank God for you, and ask Him for
nothing, except one more day…

What's Inside My Bag?

Just last month, as part of a series of monthly projects in her blog, a friend of mine started a project entitled 'What's inside your bag?' featuring a peek into fellow bloggers' bags, purses, pouches, or whatever one calls it.

I joined this project because I find the concept very interesting. A bag hag like myself is curious to know what kind of bags other women use, and what's inside their respective indispensable-it's-like-a-part-of-me constant companion.

So what's inside my bag? Click here to know my secret. :P

If you are interested to take part in her succeeding projects, please check out Cherry's blog - a {Girl} for all status for more updates.

Hmm... I wonder what she has in mind for June. :)

Sex and the City

Sex and the City is one of my favorite TV series. I'm glad they made a film out of it because the original ending in the series did not meet my expectations. It's good to know that even Carrie is entitled to a happy ending after a series of bad choices and relationships in this man-made fairytale.

If you already watched the movie, then you might be interested in joining this conversation. All you have to do is to answer the survey and post it in your blog or any social networking site. It's easy and best of all, you get paid! Click here to join now!

Snapbomb Pays You to Do What You Love

Most bloggers are in constant search for a wide array of money-making opportunities that they can do while spending time online. While there are a lot of 'get paid to' programs in the internet, currently, a favorite program that provides a steady stream of income for bloggers is getting paid to do what they love, which is blogging. And it is always worth the buzz whenever one discovers a good company that can be added to the roster of the industry's trusted blog advertising programs.

The good news here is that I just recently stumbled upon such a program, better known as Snapbomb!

Snapbomb helps advertisers and bloggers alike through the wonder of blog marketing. Bloggers get paid to write about advertising campaigns that closely match their interests and expertise, with fair rates being evaluated by an automated system that determines blog value for a particular post.

I believe that now is the best time to join their team of bloggers as they are growing extremely fast at present. So if you are looking for another way to get paid while blogging about what you know, what interests you or even passionate about, then try to check them out.

It is not often that one gets paid to do what he enjoys doing, so don’t miss out on an opportunity that could add up a nice heap to your regular income. Join Snapbomb today!
