School Thoughts

It is a sad reality that education nowadays has become more of a privilege than a right, as what it ideally should be. With the sky-rocketing school fees of private school education, most families who could not afford it either settle to enroll their children in public schools, or just skip education altogether.

This thought keep running circles in my mind as I face the challenge of plunging into the world of big school education. From small school to what I consider the big and real world of education.

The little lady took the entrance exam last week in a private Catholic school a ride away from my office. She is 6 years old and an incoming Grade 2 this school year.

Too Much, Too Soon

Everybody thinks she is too young to be Grade 2, as most students normally start elementary education at the age of 7. She started Nursery at the age of 4 and skipped Kindergarten because she passed the qualifying exam for Preparatory. I was lucky to save a year’s worth of tuition fee.

Still, there are times when I think if I made the right decision. Of course, I was thrilled when she was accelerated to a higher level. It only meant that she is intellectually capable and well advanced for her age.

That was undeniably a certified proud parent moment! But what I am more concerned about is the fact that she has advanced to a level where she needed to study more and play less.

As I go through her subjects and homework on a daily basis, I am always surprised with how much lessons they take up in a single day. Lessons that were taught to me as a 5th grader are now being taught in Grade 1!

How time really flies. I remember struggling with multiplication when I was in Grade 4, now my daughter is expected to memorize it earlier (Sheesh. I am having another flashback about how much I loathe every Math subject in school).

I always let the little lady play after school and we do all her assignments before going to bed. I do not want to put too much pressure on her, as she might get tired and bored with studying. I know kids’ brains are like sponge, but they also need a squeeze every now and then whenever they get all soaked up, or they won’t be able to absorb more.

I think schools today give kids too much academic work. I also noticed that younger kids are now being pushed to attend school by parents who worry too much that their kids might be lagging behind other children their age.

So what is the rush anyway? In my time, I did not even attend Nursery and I turned out just fine.

Schools have even invented a number of levels that they tout as a pre-requisite before attending formal elementary education - Kinder 123, Pre-K, Junior Casa and Senior Casa, to name a few. They have become ingenious in creating a need for society to succumb to. And they have so far been successful, harvesting huge profits in the process.

Small School or Big School?

Small schools are ideal for preschoolers who need to test the waters first before plunging into the big school arena. They need a place conducive for both learning and play. A fun place where they can be comfortable, not intimidated. A quaint place they will look forward to visiting again on a regular basis.

Although the little lady studied in two good small schools where she learned a lot of things apart from the basics, I decided it is time for her to continue her education in a private Catholic school, just like I did.

My dilemma was actually more on what school to choose. I had to consider proximity, safety, curriculum, values and of course, the price tag. As much as I want to send her to the most expensive school in the country, I have to be realistic. Spending an amount more than enough for a house and lot down payment is just too much, in my opinion. But of course, if you have the means, then go for it.

The school that I chose fits perfectly into my standards. It costs 150% more than the last school, but I am crossing my fingers that it will all be worth it.

Education is a very important investment. A good quality education can give a child a bright future ahead, but still there are no guarantees. Sending your child to the most expensive school may give you status symbol, but it does not assure him of a successful future. It is just one of the major components that make up a success story. Apart from that, parents have to continuously nurture their children’s gifts and potential and guide them all the way, to help them achieve their goals.

It still remains to be one of the best gifts that we can give to our children.

On Stage

I had some photos of the little lady printed today. I have a cousin in California who wanted hard copies of her recent photos to be sent tomorrow through snail mail, so I had them printed the last minute in a nearby digital shop.

Truly living in the digital age, I have gigabytes of her photos accumulated through the years. I stopped having them printed after her 4th birthday. I figured, I can store them in the computer anyways, and I will just have all of them in one batch printing in the near future (as in, when is that exactly again?).

So they piled up, month after month, occupying a lot of disk space in the hard drive. Although I always remind myself to back up, the only one that I have created is a DVD (4.7 GB) back up out of all the photos. Hopefully, my PC won't crash one of these days. Knock on wood!

These photos were taken during the recent culminating activity I was talking about in another post. She performed twice that day; first, as part of the Grade 1 class, singing and dancing to The Sound of Music's "Getting to know you", and second, the ballet dance recital.

It was great to see her on stage! Even greater, when I saw how she loved performing in front of a big audience. The $125 ballet dance lessons paid off after all! Not because she danced perfectly that day, but because of the happiness, enthusiasm and passion I saw through her eyes when she danced. What I saw that day was priceless.

Personally, I did not like her to take ballet lessons. It was not a career I imagine her pursuing in the future. I was more willing to pay for art and voice lessons, maybe because I was more inclined to them. But when the school offered the course, she wanted so much to take it so I gave in.

After having read tons of parenting books when I was still a new mother, one of the lessons I learned in order to raise a happy and well-rounded child, is to support the child's interests and motivate him/her to pursue them.

Although the little lady has the same passion for art, music and writing as I do, I noticed that she has a lot of other interests too, that she has developed entirely on her own.

One of which, is her love for plants and flowers. She has a green thumb, and I don't. Every now and then, she picks the most beautiful flowers in our garden and gives it to me and to other people in the house as a surprise. She tapes the stem to a card with her "I love you! Mwah!" note along with a nice drawing.

I realized that young as she may be, she has already become her own unique person. Eventually when she grows up, the dominant passion that she has will emerge to be the path that she will be pursuing later on. And whatever that may be, one thing is for sure - I will be there to support and guide her towards its realization.

I still want her to be an artist-model-fashion designer-singer-writer-journalist
rolled into one. But then again, that is just me hoping that she will be the best that she can be by making the most of what she has. :)

Did I mention that she got 3 medals/awards that day? What a very nice surprise to end the program!

Kid’s Question #1

If you were the ruler of the world and you could have anything you wanted as well as have people do anything you wanted, do you think you would get greedy and mean or would you be a good and fair ruler?

MY ANSWER:

Given that circumstance, I will strive hard to be a great ruler! A great ruler goes beyond being good and fair. He/she is also God-fearing, selfless, honest, and puts the welfare of his/her people above anything else.

Do you know “The Secret”?

I was in my favorite place two weeks ago to pick up a gift and some art stuff for the little lady.

I was in the bookstore!

So what's the occasion? Classes have ended, and there was an upcoming culminating activity to be held that time, in recognition of this year’s graduates and other outstanding students in her school. Not even sure of what award/s she will get on that day, I got her a present, as I always do, with or without awards/medals. After a year of hard work, she definitely deserves it.

So there I was, flipping books and pages one after the other, taking my time, as usual, when a particular book caught my eye.

It was Rhonda Byrne’s “The Secret.

I have read something about it before, but just a general review about the book being amazingly life-changing and that everyone must have a copy of it. I thought it was just one of those hyped-up products that the writer sells on Amazon. There wasn’t even a quote from the book, so I was just intrigued, but not enticed.

So back to the book.

I picked it up out of curiosity and surprisingly, I was inspired upon reading the first few pages. The review was right, all along. This is the book I’ve been looking for all my life!

Let me share with you some excerpts that I patiently typed on my mobile phone’s notepad:

“If you see it in your mind, you are going to hold it in your hand” –Bob Proctor

“You become what you think about most, but you also attract what you think about most. Your life right now is a reflection of your past thoughts. That includes all the great things and all the things you consider not so great. Since you attract to you what you think about most, it is easy to see what your dominant thoughts have been on every subject of your life because that is what you have experienced." –John Assaraf

“Your thoughts become things!” –Mike Dooley

“Thoughts are sending out that magnetic signal that is drawing the parallel back to you.” –Dr. Joe Vitale

“The predominant thought or the mental attitude is the magnet, and the law is that like attracts like, consequently, the mental attitude will invariably attract such conditions as correspondent to its nature.” –Charles Haanel

“The law of attraction is really obedient. When you think of the things you want and you focus on them with all of your intention, then the law of attraction will give you exactly what you want every time. When you focus on the things that you don’t want - I don’t want to be late – the law of attraction doesn’t hear that you don’t want it. It manifests the things that you are thinking of, and so it is going to show up over and over again. The law of attraction is not biased to wants or don’t wants. When you focus on something, no matter what it happens to be you are really calling that into existence.” –Lisa Nichols

Positive thinking complements what the book is trying to impart - the law of attraction. The secret to life! Positively focus on your goals and you will achieve them effortlessly! Of course you will also have to work to attain it, but its success greatly depends on the state of mind you have while working on it.

Do you remember a particular situation when you are trying to accomplish something, but you started on the wrong foot? You worked hard on it, nevertheless, and you gave your best. But still, all efforts have gone to waste. It just wouldn’t work out the way you wanted it to be, and you wonder what went wrong.

It is just like having a bad hair day. You wake up in a bad mood upon seeing your ridiculous mane. You wanted to fix it, but the more you brush it, the more it gets tangled. So you shampooed, blow-dried, ironed, put mousse on it, etc. But instead of fixing it, you feel you ended up with the worst hair ever. Why? Because not only that you did everything with a negative temperament, but you focused on what you did not want, and that is what exactly what you got.

So what is the point?

It all boils down to attitude. You can choose to be happy or lonely; to see the glass half-full or empty. You have the power to make things happen and be what you want to be. It is all in your hands.

Focus on what you want, and you will attract it into your life.

Having read a part of the book gave me some kind of self affirmation that I am indeed, trailing the right path.

I chose to lead an optimistic life years ago. One day, I just woke up and realized that there is no use in worrying about things that are beyond my control. So why stress over them and ruin my day thinking about people and situations that I cannot change anyway? It is a waste of time, effort, energy, and it is harmful to one’s health!

That day, I started to absolutely trust God’s will over my own. And whenever I feel I cannot carry my burdens anymore, I just surrender them to Him, for I know it will all be taken cared of.

In the kind of world we live in now, it is hard to stay positive about life. But if we just focus on what we have, we will realize that we are blessed even far beyond what we deserve. On the other hand, when we concentrate on counting what we don’t have, we will never seem to have enough.

I did not finish reading the book, but what I read was already too powerful to motivate me. I really wanted to buy it! But I had to prioritize getting a gift for the little lady (I got her some pocketbooks, by the way).

Oh well, who knows? Someone might get it for me as a gift on my birthday (barely a month away). Again, some more of my positive thinking here! :)

So do you want to know more about “The Secret”? You can visit its official website or watch the movie here for free.

Cheers to a great life ahead!

Tooth Fairy Tale

It was finally off! One of the two upper front milk teeth of my little princess was finally pulled out with a little help from none other than, moi. Good thing she is blessed with a humongous appetite for burgers and pizza, that one big bite on Brothers chicken burger took care of the first ones, while around 4 slices of pizza took care of the upper front tooth.

A little history: her two upper front teeth were already moving since last month. But the two lower front teeth were pulled out earlier, as the permanent ones have already started to emerge. We had to manually move each tooth every now and then to loosen them up, because I was already getting paranoid that the new ones will not be aligned properly with the milk teeth still strong and present.

While brushing her teeth a couple of nights ago, she told me that she thinks the Tooth Fairy has long been waiting for the upper tooth to fall off. Knowing that the more fuss I make, the more psychologically painful it would seem for her, so I felt the tooth and just quickly pulled it out without warning. It was painless, not necessarily bloodless, and she was happy.

She has a new tooth to trade with the Tooth Fairy!

In the Philippines, the Tooth Fairy is not as popular and well-publicized as good old St. Nick (aka Santa Claus). But being the voracious reader that she is, the little lady learned about the Tooth Fairy in one of her books. She was so amused with the reward system, and had looked forward to losing her first tooth from then on.

So what did she get for the two lower teeth? A crisp $1 dollar bill and a P50 peso bill (current conversion: $1 = P41). As for the front tooth, she was rewarded with a Hello Kitty toy from Mc Donald’s.

I took a lot of toothless photos of her and kept her loose teeth along with the navel clamp she had when she was still a baby (yup, I still have it!), inside a wallet. It is such a waste to see the milk teeth go, as they were still good teeth without cavities. But I guess it was really time for them to move out because the little lady is already turning 7, this August (which reminds me, I still have to plan for her party! But that’s another story).

As for the Tooth Fairy, I think she’ll be around until the last milk tooth falls. And when the little lady grows a little older, maybe I can already tell her the secret that she is related to the Tooth Fairy, after all. :)

I stumbled upon this while doing my regular EntreCard dropping. I think it's really cool! So please feel free to join us. Grab this and post it in your blog. The goal is to reach 1,000 links!

* Start Copy Here*

You do not have to be tagged to play along. This game is simple and so are the rules.

1. Copy from *Start Copy Here* through *End Copy Here*

2. Add your site(s) to the list. Just be sure to post the "Big Bang" at each site you add.

3. Tag or don’t tag, your choice, however, the more tags you create the longer the list will grow.

4. Let me know your blog’s name and url by leaving me a comment HERE. I will add you to the master list. (If you would like a scroll box code, leave me your email address and I will email it to you.) Scroll Box Example. (I decided not to use the box for the Big Bang for ease of copying.)

5. Come back and copy the master list back to your site, often. This process will allow late-comers to get as much link benefit as the first ones in. Once you are on the master list people who have participated earlier will update their bookmarks and help everyone lower than them out on the list.
